Set on sprawling lawns at the base of Mount Ainslie, directly north of Canberra's Old and New Parliament Houses, the Australian War Memorial is a peaceful and picturesque site. There are bronze plaques lining walking paths, sculptures in the garden (including of WWI hero, Simpson and his donkey), a shrine and museum and cafe among other things to explore. Give yourself a few hours to wander through, read moving and fascinating war stories, learn about battles and machinery and just take it all in. Absolutely worth seeing for anyone interested in Australia's military involvement over time.
